Critical Mass

August 28, 2007

Critical Mass, a bicycle ride the last friday of every month in your local city. The next one is of course on August 31.

Well the 2007 IMO has been won and run, with results and problems available from the official website (and the Australian results from the AMT of course as well). Max doing a sterling job leading the way with 28 and a silver.

I briefly tried my hand at the problems, and solved 1,2,4,5. I open the floor to anyone wanting to answer the question: Is it just me, or is there a trend to having an increased difference in degree of difficulty between problems 1,2,4,5 and problems 3,6?

Also I notice that Irene has started some writing about the event – we wait for her to continue.

Website Review: bugmenot

August 2, 2007

The website bugmenot provides one with useful passwords when annoying sites (mainly media service providers) force you to waste time registering simply in order to view an article. There are a couple of complaints that I have with the site though, which deal with the issue that some websites are deliberately excluded from the database. The two that I can think of that I recently wanted to use are amazon (they require you to register to use the look inside feature) and facebook (no money changing hands, so why should sites be behind a firewall). So a newer better bugmenot without such silly exclusions would be ideal, but in the meantime, we’ll have to stick with what we’ve got.
